Geelong Gala Day

Edgard Vatcky - Coach 6-April-2009

On Sunday the 5th of March in April, A Champions League was to be held by FFV to invite players from the country and Melbourne Futsal League to play each other in hard fought battles. In this competition, the two age goups from the Melbourne Futsal League (u/11 and u/13) played.

Our two Cobras teams went down to Geelong, eager to start. Our u/11's had 4 teams in their league, Geelong, Bayside Pirates, Melbourne Reds and Australian Futsal Group. Their outcome was very good, losing 1, drawing 1 and winning two against AFG and Geelong. The u/11's did a fantastic job, being placed in second position.

Our u/13 team only had two teams in their league, Geelong and Australian Futsal League. Unlike the u/11's, these teams play two twenty minute halves. The outcome for the u/13's was extraordinary; they won to AFG 6-1 and beat Geelong 21-3. This put them into 1st position.

The Champions League was not just held for the games, the MFL awards were given to the teams coming 2nd and 1st in the MFL. Both Cobras teams came runners up but obtained their first piece of silverware.

COBRAS SUCCESS STORY

Edgard Vatcky - Coach 15-Feb-2009

The U11 team has finished runners up in the inaugural Melbourne Futsal League. The team was made up of players who got together for the very first time on the first day of competition. The talent in this group was obvious from the beginning. As we developed our skills and tactical knowledge, the team grew stronger and stronger showing that they could mix it with State players.

The last 2 rounds were a bit trying as we were not able to work on many elements of Futsal due to problems with our training facilities. We went into the last round on equal points with Melbourne Reds (current State champions) but with the advantage of a massive goal difference. The boys started of a bit shaky as the forgot to do some of the basics of Futsal. As we talked about these mistakes, the boys started fixing them and started showing great creative leadership. The final game was against Melbourne Reds where we prevailed and played a great game securing the runners up medal.

I am proud to be their coach and expect several of these players to make State selection later in the year.

The U13 boys also finished runners up. There are also no State players in this team yet they are played great Futsal and showed great team spirit.
